Single duty system reduces KSRTC trips in Kozhikode Palakkad route

Malappuram: Introduction of single duty system in KSRTC has lead do drastic reduction of passenger in Kozhikode- Palakkad route which is was one of the busiest routes for KSRTC, report says. Untimely arrival of buses, which once followed schedule was one of the main reason for passengers to not use KSRTC services. This has also turned into a boon for private services along this route.

Thousands of passengers use to depend on KSRTC along Kozhikode Palakkad route daily, despite them charging more for tickets than private services including for SEZ. The only reason was that they had buses scheduled in every ten minutes over this route, providing KSRTC a great deal of collection. But the introduction of single duty system has turned the schedule upside down. To follow single duty Schedule bus employees are forced to abandon the trip schedule in the middle.

KSRTC authority has taken decision to introduce single duty following the High Court Order as per the recommendations of Susheel Khanna committee that was appointed for re-modification of KSRTC. The idea was in wake of accidents that mostly occurs at night, due to the bus drivers falling asleep while driving. Sources said that the recent KSRTC bus accident at Kottiyam in Kollam was also due to the same reason. KSRTC authority assumed that eight hours duty will allow the crew to take rest properly. Hence employees have been limited to 8 hours per day. The duty will be handed over to another driver and conductor when they complete their working hours

The new system of Single duty id introduced in town to town services and in the route of Kozhikode – Palakkad most buses are of town to town duty. During trips from Pallakkad To Kozhikode or vice versa, most employees has to end their trip schedule in the halfway at Malappuram and Perinthalmanna, in order to follow eight hours duty. This followed by inadequate employes reduces the number of trips in schedule. Also, passengers are often forced to change buses middle way when the trips unexpectedly ends.

Instead of increase in rush of passengers into the buss with lesser number of trips, situation has ended up in such a way that most seats remain empty during trips. Even those passengers who require a direct trip to either destinations have avoided KSRTC in fear of their trip being cancelled in between.

On the other hand private services enjoys a huge rush of passengers.Once in history private buses had such little profit that 24 private services were known to stop their service here. Now with the tables turning, Corporation is facing a deep loss as private owners make huge profit. Although KSRTC employees are in support with the new system, they pointed out that inefficient implementation of the system has lead to this chaos.
