The Gujarat Story: Over 40,000 women have gone missing in five years; says NCRB data

Ahmadabad: Over 40,000 women missing cases have been reported from BJP ruling Gujarat in the last five years. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released this official statistics. According to NCRB data, 7,105 women went missing in 2016, 7,712 in 2017, 9,246 in 2018, 9,268 in 2019 and 8,290 in 2020. The total missing report amounts to 41,621 in Gujarat alone.

As per a statement made by the state government in the Assembly in 2021, 4,788 women have gone missing especially in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, the major cities of the Gujarat state.

A serious claim had been raised by Sudhir Sinha, a member of Gujarat State Human Rights Commission and former IPS officer that, “some women and girls are forcibly sent to foreign states for sex works”. This statement needs to be read along with the missing case data.

He also raises a serious allegation against the police of BJP lead Gujarat. “The police do not give priority to missing person complaints. Missing person cases are frequently ignored by the police since they are investigated in the British-era manner,” Sinha said.

Gujarat Congress leader Hiren Banker criticized Gujarat government and BJP for the huge women missing. He added that BJP leaders are busy talking about Kerala women than 40,000 women are missing in Gujarat, the home state of the country’s PM as well as the Home Minister.
