QUESTION TAGS

Question tags are the short questions that we put on the end of sentences. To make a tag, use the first auxiliary. If there is no auxiliary, use do, does or did. With a positive sentence, make a negative tag and with a negative sentence, make a positive tag.

1) If the main part of the sentence is positive, the question tag is negative.
For example:-
a)    It is beautiful, isn’t it?
b)    You can, can’t you?
c)    He will come, won’t he?
d)    She is a teacher, isn’t she?

2) If the main part of the sentence is negative, the question tag is positive.
For example:-
a)    She doesn’t know him, does she?
b)    It can’t be, can it?
c)    It hasn’t rained, has it?
d)    It isn’t very good, is it?

3) If the main part of the sentence doesn’t have an auxiliary verb, the question tag uses an appropriate form of ‘do’.
For example:-
a)    I said that, didn’t I?
b)    She eats a mango, doesn’t she?

4) Be careful with question tags with sentences that start ‘I am…’ The question tag of ‘I am…’ is ‘aren’t I?’
5) If the main clause verb is ‘used to’, the tag verb is ‘did’.
For example:-He used to live in Kerala, didn’t he?
6) If the main clause verb is ‘ought to’, the tag verb is most commonly ‘should’.
For example:-We ought to leave now, shouldn’t we?
6) When tags follow imperatives, the tag verb is usually ‘will’.
For example:-Phone me this evening, will you?
